1. What does “Tilt-in-Space” actually mean?

Unlike a standard recliner where the backrest moves away from the seat, a Tilt-in-Space (TIS) mechanism tilts the entire chair frame backwards as a single unit.

• The fixed angle: The angle between the seat and the backrest remains fixed (usually at 90 degrees).

• The benefit: As you recline, your lower back remains securely pressed against the chair. This prevents you from sliding down the chair (shearing) and needing to constantly readjust your clothing or position. It provides excellent support for the pelvis and spine.

2. How is a Dual Motor different from a Single Motor chair?

The “Dual Motor” aspect refers to the flexibility of the chair’s movement.

• Single Motor: The footrest and backrest move simultaneously. As the footrest rises, the back restricts automatically.

• Dual Motor: You have two independent motors. You can raise the footrest fully while keeping the backrest upright (perfect for watching TV). Alternatively, you can adjust the backrest to any angle without affecting the leg position. This offers a much wider range of comfortable seating positions.

3. Can this chair help with fluid retention (Oedema) in my legs?

Yes, this is one of the primary medical benefits of this specific chair type. Because it combines Dual Motor independent control with the Tilt-in-Space action, you can achieve a position where your ankles are elevated higher than your heart level. This uses gravity to help drain fluid from the lower legs and improve circulation, which is significantly more effective than a standard recliner which often only lifts the legs horizontally.

4. Is a Tilt-in-Space chair better for pressure relief?

Generally, yes. If you spend long periods of the day sitting, a Tilt-in-Space mechanism is often recommended by occupational therapists. By tilting the whole chair back, you shift your body weight from being concentrated solely on your buttocks and thighs to being spread evenly across your back. This redistribution of pressure helps minimise the risk of pressure sores (ulcers) and reduces fatigue.

5. Does the chair need to be placed far from the wall?

Riser recliners are substantial pieces of furniture, and a Tilt-in-Space model often requires more room behind it than a standard ‘wall-hugger’ chair. Because the entire seat casing pivots backwards, you generally need to leave a gap of between 30cm to 50cm (12 to 20 inches) between the back of the chair and the wall to allow for a full recline. It is always best to measure your room space before ordering.

6. What happens if there is a power cut while I am reclined?

Safety is a standard feature in these chairs. Almost all modern riser recliners sold in the UK come equipped with a battery backup system. This is usually a simple compartment for standard 9V batteries (or a rechargeable battery pack) located on the transformer block. If the mains power fails, this emergency battery provides enough power to return the chair to a seated or standing position so you are not stuck comfortably—but inconveniently—reclined.
